Closed Loop Chilled Water

Closed circuit or closed loop water systems are a convenient way of heating or cooling building services applications and industrial and commercial processes. As the name “closed loop” suggests the intention is generally to retain the same water in the system for an indefinite period which means that without effective water treatment, freeze protection and corrosion products; foulants can build up impairing flow and heat transfer and efficiency of the system

If untreated closed loop systems can leak through frost damage, become a breeding ground for a range of microbes such as pseudomonas, nitrifying and sulphate reducing bacteria. They can cause fouling, destroy closed loop inhibitors and cause MIC (microbial induced corrosion). A chilled water biocide is essential to prevent slime.

Glycol based solutions (Antifreeze) can protect equipment from low ambient and freezing process conditions. If your system is exposed to freezing ambient conditions, you must protect your system. If your chilled water supply temperature is below 100C, it is likely that you will need to use Glycol (antifreeze).

Without antifreeze protection, it is likely that flash freezing of the plates in the evaporator can be robbing system efficiency or, worse yet, causing permanent damage to the heat exchanger itself.

Water quality for chilled water systems should minimize corrosion, scale build-up, and biological growth for optimum efficiency of HVAC equipment without creating a hazard to operating personnel or the environment.
